CAMDEN, N.J. — According to Reet Starwind, founder of Team Dreamer LLC, being a Black anime fan is “cool now.”

In 2021, Starwind, and other artists in the Camden area began developing an anime series called “Dreamer’s Playlist.”

He serves as lead writer on the show.

“‘Dreamer’s Playlist’ is what happens when you take these classic story conventions from anime, and you blend it through a modern Black American lens for an original story about the power of young Black masculinity,” Starwind said.

The growing popularity of shows like Netflix’s “Yasuke” and the cult classic “Afro Samurai,” prove that there is space for everyone within this niche world of animation, rooted in Japanese culture.

So far, the show’s crowdfunding efforts have raised more than $10,000.
