Article By Tennyson Donyea

If you’re into stories that hit home, two upcoming events in Newark are worth your time. From a gritty, real-life-inspired play to a youth-led film tackling challenging social issues, these events offer a blend of storytelling that’s both raw and transformative.

Yendor Theater Company (YTC) Presents the NJ Premiere of “Tiers” by Reg E. Gaines
Mark your calendar for “Tiers,” a new play by Grammy- and Tony-nominated writer Reg E. Gaines (“Bring in Da Noise, Bring in Da Funk). The play takes you into the lives of four Black teens in 1970s Jersey City, kicking off with a simple night of cards that spirals into personal conflict and violence. It’s a stark exploration of toxic masculinity, impulsive behavior, and the long arm of the criminal justice system. Gaines keeps it all the way real, spotlighting the realities many young men face.

Andrew Binger, YTC’s artistic director, said in a statement to Black In Jersey, “We are ecstatic to be working with reg again and to bring a fully staged version of “Tiers” to Newark. reg is such a raw artist and Tiers feels like an authentic slice of life for young men in our cities. We all need to see, engage and learn from this play.”
